Welcome to Trinity Medical Pharmacy’s medication disposal program. Local community pharmacists are using their knowledge to ensure the safe and proper handling of your medications.
Trinity Medical Pharmacy will take back unused, expired or unwanted medications. These medications are then sent to a vendor who incinerates the products. Incineration is the most environmentally friendly method of disposal.
Unsafe disposal affects both you and the environment. More than 100 different prescription medications have been detected in lakes, rivers, reservoirs and streams throughout the world. Prescription medications are being detected in the environment and there is genuine concern that these compounds, in the small concentrations that they’re at, could be causing impacts to human health and to aquatic organisms.
Safe disposal of prescription medications could save lives. Each year in the United States, more than 71,000 children aged 18 and younger are seen in emergency rooms for unintentional overdoses of prescription and over-the-counter drugs. More than three in five teens say prescription pain relievers are easy to get from parents’ medicine cabinets; half of teens say they are easy to get through other people’s prescriptions; and more than half say prescription pain relievers are “available everywhere.” Drug abuse isn’t the only risk associated with unused medications. Ingesting expired medications can be harmful. Improper disposal of medications that are no longer marked or prescribed may lead to accidental ingestion causing drug interactions or adverse drug events. Accidental ingestion by children, the elderly, or pets can also occur.
With proper disposal of medications, you can help prevent drug misuse and abuse and protect the environment.
